Why are so many Thames sailing barges for sale?

Why are so many Thames sailing barges for sale?

I am sure I have seen others for sale recently, as well. I don't know why, and it is wrong to speculate. I have this dream of having a fleet of them. And delivering stuff up and down the Thames. Profitably.

  1. I'm always astonished at just how much money is needed to keep boats going. You often see small classic boats for sale and don't realise quite how much is needed just to stop them deteriorating any further. I recall reading the story of how a very small classic yacht was restored: the cost of the boat was a few thousand pounds but the cost of restoration was over one hundred thousand.

  3. The market is sinking fast. The economic climate is not condusive to sailing in a breeze on the Medway whilst making a profit. Impossible. Not good news for sailing barges in general. Simon
